Chiang Mai - Bangkok

Other than cooking and elephants, we ran around Chiang Mai with Emalie by foot, bike, and motorbike.

With our motorbikes we rode up the mtn to Doi Suthep, 2nd visit for Matt and I, but this time at sunrise! It was beautiful and quiet. Only us, a handful of other tourists, and the monks finishing up their daily chores & beginning alms rounds.

We tried to find a hill tribe further up the mountain but just ended up scootin' around the jungle for a while. After that we rode out to a big lake that took us a while to find. Thais like to go here on the weekends, but it was dead quiet on the weekday we stopped by. En route we had a run in with the police (stopping every tourist) and had to give up some cash to be on our way.

Some other pics from around Chiang Mai - Emalie with her signature pose, Matt had to done a purple robe at one temple since he was in a tank top, and some monks hanging their laundry out to dry.

After our cooking class on Thanksgiving we took our first tuk-tuk ride and hopped a night train to Bangkok. It wasn't quite The Darjeeling Limited, but it was fun. The seats fold into bunk beds so when you're ready, the staff come and make up your bed for you. By the time you wake up, you've gone from the mountains to the sprawling, crazy city.

Bangkok is a wild city. We only spent a day here, and spent much of it at the Hilton. (Thanks Laurie Gainey!) We had an infinity pool and a room with a view of the river. The river there is used like a roadway and you can take water taxis to all the major tourist spots and really anywhere you'd want to go. We even splurged for a drink on our rooftop bar that night - worth the NYC-like prices to be above the smog. :)

Next up is the eastern islands.

xx ELM
